Water Baptism

What is baptism?

Water baptism is a public declaration of an inward decision. It is how we demonstrate that we have decided to follow Jesus Christ for the rest of our lives. When we are immersed in the water and come out of the water, it symbolizes our new beginning in Christ.

Romans 6:3-5 NIV: Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection.

Why do we get baptized?

Jesus desires that every believer be baptized. John the Baptist initially did not want to baptize Jesus because he felt unworthy to do so. Jesus caused John the Baptist to change his mind when He said, “This is how it should be, because we must do all that God wants us to do.” Matthew 3:15 CEV.

The Great Commission that Jesus entrusted to His followers is found in Matthew 28:19 NIV: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Who should get baptized?

All believers should be baptized. If you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart and have asked Him to lead you in your life, you should be baptized. Jesus connects your baptism with following Him. The Bible doesn’t provide an age limit. What is most important is that you have made this decision without the influence of other people. You should not get baptized to please your friends and family. You get baptized to please God alone.

Does getting baptized mean that God expects me to be perfect? And if I make a mistake, does that mean I need to get baptized again?

Our God is a God of love and mercy. God desires the best for us. Our sins are forgiven because Jesus died for our sins—not only the sins of our past but the mistakes that we have yet to make. While He knows that we will make mistakes, He desires that we do our best to obey Him.
